The Hub is offering MBSR beginning in the new year!  We are excited to announce that on Monday January 23, 2012, long time Hub member, Augusta Hopkins, will begin teaching an 8-week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course as developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn

Come to the introductory session oMonday night January 23rd from 6:30-9pm at Hub Berkeley in the David Brower Center and decide then if you want to take the course.  REGISTER HERE.  Or you can register in advance for the full 8-week course above.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD in 1979 at the University of Massachusetts.  It is now offered at more than 600 institutions worldwide. It is a course founded in the age-old practice of meditation and an understanding that awareness brings relief.

The course will include:

  • awareness of the breath
  • awareness of the body (body scanning, qigong, simple yoga)
  • awareness of awareness (sitting, walking & eating meditation)

By developing these skills participants will cultivate mindbody awareness to relieve stress, anxiety and depression.

Three decades of studies show that MBSR training and practice develop:

  • physical, mental, and emotional health
  • increased well-being, and happiness
  • peace of mind in difficult and even frantic times
  • improved relationships
  • greater self-compassion

Augusta Hopkins is an experienced, colorful, creative instructor, and is passionate about mindfulness practice.  She has been engaged in movement and meditation since 1977 and has practiced mindfulness meditation in Japan, Vietnam, Thailand and France.  Her practice is deeply rooted in the United States, specifically Northern California.

Augusta's Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction training was with leading MBSR instructor and author Dr. Bob Stahl.  She has been mentored by and has co-taught with Renee Burgard LCSW, senior Bay Area MBSR instructor for the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Apple, Google and Stanford.  Augusta received lay ordination from Thich Nhat Hanh, her primary teacher, and is a lay monastic member of the Order of Interbeing.

Mindfulness is a valuable tool for developing awareness of the temporary nature of all things; which has the potential to lead to acceptance of things just as they are.
